What catches people out in Brazil
The real uses a comma as the decimal separator, so "R$ 12,50" is twelve and a half reais, not twelve thousand five hundred.
When this rule stops working
Rules of thumb rot quietly. This one holds while the rate stays roughly between 6.25 and 6.35 BRL to the franc. Outside that band a different divisor becomes the better one to memorise.
