When the trip becomes a stay

Different problems from a holiday, and mostly duller ones.

Travel money advice is written for two-week trips. Past about a month the problems change: the small inefficiencies you tolerated start compounding, and things that never mattered — currency exposure, address requirements, tax residency — begin to.

What changes

The local account question

Opening a local bank account usually needs a residence permit, a local address and sometimes a tax number, which is exactly what a long-stay visitor tends not to have. Where it is possible it solves rent, bills and recurring payments in one move. Where it is not, a multi-currency account that supports local transfers is the usual workaround.

Two things people put off too long

The everyday part gets easier, though: after a month you stop converting consciously because you have internalised the prices. Until then, the rule of thumb does the job.
