Everything needed to write about RoamRate accurately, in one place.
In one line
RoamRate is an offline-first currency converter for iPhone, built for one-handed use, that shows what everyday things cost locally — free to download, with a single $4.99 unlock and no subscription.
In a paragraph
RoamRate is a currency converter designed around the moment travellers actually need one: standing up, one-handed, often with no signal. Rates are stored on the device so it works in airplane mode; the keypad is built for a thumb rather than using the iOS system keyboard; and it detects the country you land in to set the local currency. A Local Price Index shows typical costs for everyday items where you are, so a quoted price can be judged rather than merely translated. It is free to download with five major currencies, and a one-time $4.99 purchase unlocks all 150+ currencies, the tipping calculator and the full price index. There are no ads, no account, no analytics and no subscription.

Angles that might be worth your time
- Apple commoditised this category. Since iOS 18 the iPhone Calculator converts currency offline for free. We wrote the honest comparison ourselves, including who should not buy our app.
- Utilities are being turned into subscriptions. Several long-standing converters now charge annually for what used to be a purchase. There is a broader story there about small tools and recurring revenue.
- Offline is a design decision, not a technical limit. Most converters need a connection because they need an ad network, not because exchange rates demand it.
