You already have Revolut. Do you need this too?
A fair question, and the answer is often no.
Revolut is a bank account, a card, and a currency-exchange service in one app, and it shows conversions as part of that. For a lot of travellers it is the main way they interact with foreign money at all.
If it covers what you need, it covers it. This page is about the edges.
Where Revolut alone falls short for travel
- It needs a connection. It is a banking app, so it authenticates against a server. In airplane mode, in a market with no data, or on a flaky roaming connection, it is not a converter you can rely on.
- It is several taps deep. Converting is a feature inside a financial product, not the thing the app opens into. That is fine at a table and slow at a counter.
- Weekend and out-of-hours markups. Exchange through the app itself can carry a surcharge outside market hours, which is a real cost most people discover after the fact rather than before.
- It answers "what does this equal", not "is this fair". Same limit every converter has.
Where Revolut is clearly better
- It actually holds and moves your money, in multiple currencies.
- Its card generally beats a high-street bank card abroad by a wide margin.
- It works on Android, and on a laptop.

The honest answer
If you convert a few times a trip and always have signal, Revolut plus the free converter in your iPhone covers it completely, and you should not buy anything. The case for a dedicated converter is speed with one hand and reliability with no connection — not a better rate, because nobody has a better rate than the mid-market number everyone quotes.
If "no signal" keeps happening to you
RoamRate opens straight into a thumb-sized keypad and never needs the network. $4.99 once.
